New (to me) Video website

Published by billymac under ads, media, pimping, stuff, video

I was wondering when the big TV/Movie media companies were going to get smart about internet delivery of material.  They have been getting better over the years, but you would have to go to their individual pages like ABC.com or NBC.com and have limited choices for viewing.  Enter hulu.com, evidently NBC-Universal and News Corp put this thing together (or at least funded it initially and provided content) and off it went.  It started in private beta last October and went public in March.  I first heard of it a couple of days ago.  The site offers a good alternative to grainy pirated clips of shows that you find on youtube and allows a central site for full length movies, tv shows, and clips of both.  You can embed the shit too (see below).  I never thought I would pimp for the MSM, but fuckit, the site makes sense, you just have to sit through some short comercials every once and a while, but they are bearable for an otherwise free service.

Here’s the best part about embedding, and I’ve been looking for this simple functionality forever. You can very easily and intuitively control the start and stop time of the embedded content. Very cool feature.

Dude you just bought a… Mac?

Published by billymac under ads, cool, personal, stuff

Guess what bitches? That’s right, we bought an iMac. I have to be honest, it wasn’t exactly my idea, in fact I bought it as a gift for my wife’s birthday (she’s so fucking old now). My wife is a much bigger techno-geek than I am, we have something like 437 iPods and iPod accessories around the house plus countless PDA’s, cell phones, DVD players, and whatever gadget you can think of. So getting an iMac wasn’t a huge stretch. What was surprising to me, is that the box that included the computer didn’t come with a black turtleneck, black rimmed sunglasses, and an application to go work at an ad-agency. I guess you were supposed to be wearing those things before you open the box.

What’s really cool about the machine (warning: I’m going to geek out here for a second), is that the operating system is based on UNIX. The iMac OS on our new machine is called OSX “Leopard”, and is based on the BSD flavor of UNIX. Click here for even more geeky information about OSX. So what? you may ask… well it seems to me that the marketing dudes over at Apple should be playing that card way more strongly than they are. They should be hitting up the techno-savvy guys that are tired of Microsoft’s poor software equally as hard as the disheveled hipsters in their ads. I don’t think I will ever be a complete convert, because unlike our retarded political system in the US, a person can actually be in both camps at the same time in this situation as tech is tech (i.e., a means to an ends).Mac vs. PC

Going Ad Free

Published by billymac under ads, corporate, site

I had tinkered with Google AdSense to see if it could generate some revenue for the site.  I think I ended up with a total of 7 clicks out of 7 or 8 thousand page impressions for a whopping $1.33 of pure profit, not so good.  So I’m dumping the no-good bitch.  Call it a failed pilot, on the plus side, the site doesn’t look as cluttered.  I think it will take a lot of convincing for me to put ads back up and at least an order of magnitude increase in traffic before I reconsidered.
